GLOSSARY
TEXT
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a wide-ranging branch of computer science concerned with building smart machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence.
A blockchain is an open, distributed ledger that records transactions in code. It could be seen as a checkbook distributed across countless computers around the world. Transactions are recorded in “blocks” that are then linked together on a “chain” of previous cryptocurrency transactions.
A cryptocurrency is a digital, encrypted and decentralized medium of exchange that allows you to buy goods and services, but uses an online ledger with strong cryptography to secure online transactions.
A domain is a part of an Internet address. The network hierarchy consists of domains and subdomains. At the top are a number of major categories (e.g., com, edu, gov); next are domains within these categories (e.g., ohio-state); and then there are subdomains. The computer name is at the lowest level of the hierarchy.
File Transfer Protocol or FTP is a client/server protocol used for transferring files to or from a host computer. FTP may be authenticated with user names and passwords.
Hosting, also known as web hosting is the process of allocating space on a web server for a website to store its files. Web hosting makes the files that comprise a website (code, images, etc.) available for viewing online. Every website we visit is hosted on a server.
Hypertext transfer protocol, or HTTP is the standard protocol modern web browsers and the web itself uses.
IEEE stands for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. This is a nonprofit professional association of scientists and engineers working toward the development, implementation and maintenance of technology-centered products and services.
IP or Internet Protocol address is a unique identification number assigned to a computer on the internet. The number consists of four groups of numbers between 0 and 255, separated by periods. For example, 195.112.56.75 is an IP address.
ISP stands for Internet Service Provider. It refers to any company that provides you with an Internet connection. An example of ISP Nexxt Global.
NAS or Network-Attached Storage device is a product that allows data storing and retrieving at a centralized point for authorized network users and multiple clients. NAS devices are flexible and expandable; if you need more storage capacity, you can add it to what you already have.
Port Forwarding consists on making a computer on your home or business network accessible to computers on the internet, even though they are behind a router. It is commonly applied in gaming, security camera setup, voice over IP, and downloading files. After you have forwarded a port, you are said to have an open port.
Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is a telecommunications network, which allows voice communication between people at different sites. PSTN works by using underground copper wires that are hardwired from homes and businesses to switching centers—where the phone calls are connected to each other.
PTZ stands for Pan, Tilt, Zoom. They robotic video cameras controllable by a remote operator to pan horizontally, tilt vertically & diagonally, and zoom in on a subject to enhance the image quality without digital pixilation.
Statistical & Qualitative Data Analysis Software is a command-based software package used for statistical analysis and data visualization. It is arguably one of the most widely used statistical software packages in both industry and academia. It has a large number of statistical functions, an easy-to-use interface and excellent technical support. It is fully suitable for complex operations.
A server is a computer responsible for responding to requests made by a client program or computer. It is also referred to as a “file server”.
A smart contract is a self-executing contract with the terms of the agreement between buyer and seller being directly written into lines of code. The code and the agreements contained therein exist across a distributed, decentralized blockchain network.
Smart Motion Detection (SMD) refers to an advanced algorithmic technology to differentiate human and vehicular shapes within a scene, and send alarms only when a person or vehicle is detected.
TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol. It refers to a standardized data transferring method that enables application programs and computing devices to exchange messages over a network. TCP is designed to organize and send data packets between a server and a client across the internet, ensuring their successful delivery.
Transfer Video Interface or TVI is the latest technology in HD Analogue transmission. It is capable of delivering up to 1080p (2.1 megapixel) resolution images.
User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is another method for transferring data between two computers in a network. UDP allows to send data packets directly to a target computer, without establishing a connection first, indicating the order of said packets, or checking whether they arrived as intended.
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, which is proven technology that allows to make voice calls using a broadband internet connection instead of a regular phone line. It is used for the delivery of high range voice communications as well as multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP).
Webmail is a Web-based email system. These types of server-based email systems are popular because they offer a convenient alternative to email services that reside on a particular workstation, avoiding the process of logging into a connection with the server, where emails are stored on site in the hardware storage drive.
A web server is a system of software and hardware that uses the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), and some other data transfer methods that respond to requests from clients made on the World Wide Web. The main job that the webserver performs is to display the content of a website, which it does by storing, then processing, and eventually delivering the web pages to the client who has requested it.
Wide Dynamic Range technology improves a camera’s image quality under high-contrast lighting conditions where both dimly and brightly lit areas are present in the field of view. It enables the camera to capture details clearly in both the poor and the strongly illuminated areas of the video.
